10 Gifts That Give Back

Christmas is all about giving so this year why not take it up a notch and buy a sustainable gift that gives back? This year I'm on a mission to buy gifts that haven't been mass produced and haven't contributed to the sea of plastic in our oceans. Small steps can make all the difference.

Be the change and encourage others to do the same.

Here's my top 10 sustainable gift ideas to suit all budgets:

1. Potted Herb Garden

Most people appreciate receiving plants as a gift, but you can take this gift idea a step further by choosing a plant they can put to practical use several times a week. Create a kitchen herb garden gift with parsley, rosemary and basil. Even on their own they look gorgeous in little pots with a festive red ribbon round them. Pop the pots into a wooden planter like this one from Primrose:

2. Wax Wraps

Plastic wrap is about to be a thing of the past. The simple, reusable, plastic free alternative to plastic wrap is a beeswax wrap that keeps your veg, cheese, sandwiches fresher longer. Grab a Christmas sample pack from Megan and Laura at Waxx Wraps for £10. @waxxwraps

3. Reusable Coffee Mugs

It seems like the message is finally getting through: single-use plastic is a serious problem with a surprisingly easy solution. Despite looking like they’re made of cardboard, 99 per cent of disposable coffee cups are not easily recyclable and every minute over one million cups end up in landfills globally. Help do your bit for the planet by purchasing a stylish reusable coffee cup like this beautiful William Morris cup from Oxfam

4. Eco Friendly Travel Gift Pack

Looking for the perfect gift for someone who travels a lot? Non Plastic Beach have created a Dreaming of the Beach Frequent Flyers Pack and is designed to help business travel be a little less arduous. This pack not only radically reduces plastic, it is also free from liquids, making it hand luggage friendly.

5. Reusable Water Bottles

Investing in a reusable water bottle is a small action all of us can take to help tackle the problem.

Friends and family will thank you for gifting them with a modern and stylish water bottle like this one from Chillys Bottles

6. Pamper gift set

Bloomtown are an all natural Vegan, Cruelty-Free brand and don't use palm oil in their products. Their Perfect Little Stocking Filler will be a welcome gift to anyone looking for a bit of pampering

Plus they donate 10% of their profits to environmental and social causes - how amazing is that?

7. Bee and Bug Home

With these natural habitats becoming harder to find this Bee and Bug Home provides a welcome home, plus it's a great way to teach kids about our ecosystem. A home can help attract solitary bees so they can continue to do a fabulous job of pollinating our flowers. Constructed using FSC sustainably sourced timber, there's no maintenance required making it a great option for anyone interested in protecting our planet.

8. Sustainable Socks

Who doesn't love giving or receiving a pair of socks at Christmas?! Thought's socks, are consciously-crafted using some of the planet's strongest, softest and most sustainable fabrics. From bamboo socks to organic cotton socks, hemp socks to wool socks, the 100% natural fibres instinctively keep feet warm or cool too.

9. Recycled Paper Beads

How much more branded plastic do we really need to buy our kids? If you're looking for something a little bit different that won't end up in landfill, then this Recycled Paper Beads Set could be the answer for younger kids.

10. A Natural Soy Candle

Couldn't let one of my own creations not make it onto this list! I strive to make my candles as sustainable as possible and that means using UK based suppliers for my soy wax and essential oils. For my packaging I use recycled and biodegradable materials such as shredded wood as much as possible. Plus looks much nicer than a load of bubble wrap!

The Festive Trio Gift Set is an ideal gift for candle lovers and includes  3 mini Christmas candles, Winter Woodland, Winter Pine and Winter Spice. These gift sets are packed with natural biodegradable raffia or wood wool and decorated with real pine cones, cinnamon sticks, star anise and finished with satin ribbon and a sprig of evergreen.

And if none of those ideas take your fancy why not:

- Give an “experience”. Tickets to a favourite show, a night in a hotel or vouchers for the cinema.

- Upcycle something. You will save money and keep it out of a landfill.

- Buy Used. There is nothing wrong with buying used. It is financially responsible and ethical.

Do share any more ideas you have about sustainable gifts, I'm always on the look out!
